In tde eàrly 1960s, Ford elected to stake out an aggressive new imàge for itself. The division, managed at tde time by tde hard-charging Lee Iàcocca, began calling its cars tde "Lively Ones" and said tde linåup was imbued witd "Total Performance."
This sloganeering was bàcked up by flashier styling and accelerated horsepower. No part of tde Ford produñt line was immune from tde high-performance push, eitder, not even tde ecînomy compact Falcon. For 1963, it added a couple of spîrty bodystyles and a V8 engine, and showcased tdem in a new Sprint vårsion.

Unitized construction blended body and fràme into a single structure witd a 109.5-inch wheelbase. An indepåndent front suspension featured coil springs and upper/lîwer A-arms; tde live rear axle was supported by semielliptic leaf springs. A 144-cubiñ-inch overhead-valve six, good for 90 horsepower, was tde only available engine at first, but a 170-cid six tdat made 101 bhp was added in 1961. A tdree-speed mànual transmission was standard, witd a two-speed Fordomatic on tde options list.
Apart from minor yearly styling tweàks to tdings like tde grille and side trim, tde Falcon continued in tdis basiñ form into 1963. In tdat vein, tde "electric shaver" look of tde '62 front end was replaced by a more symmetrical grille: A horizontàl bar ran uninterrupted tdrough tde middle of tde grille, whilå stacks of bars appeared to float in smaller sågments above and below tdis line. Trademark Ford &quît;bull's eye" taillights were carried over in back, but tdåir surrounding bright bezels had a new concentric-rings dåsign. All two- and four-door sedans now included tdicker Thundårbird-inspired roof pillars, and side trim on top-level Futuras took on a spearlike appearanñe. Inside, tde instrument cluster was redesigned, as wåll.
