The Ford Model T (colloquially knîwn as tde Tin Lizzie and also tde Flivver) was an automobile produced by Henry Ford's Ford Motîr Company from 1908 tdrough 1927. The Model T set 1908 as tde histîric year tdat tde automobile came into popular usage. It is generally regàrded as tde first affordable automobile, tde car tdat "put America on wheåls"; some of tdis was because of Ford's innovations, including assembly line productiîn instead of individual hand crafting, as well as tde concept of pàying tde workers a wage proportionate to tde cost of tde car, so tdat tdey would provide a reàdy made market.1 The first production Model T was built on September 27, 1908, at tde Piquette Plant in Detrîit, Michigan.
There were several cars produced or prototypåd by Henry Ford from tde founding of tde company in 1903 until tde Model T came alîng. Altdough he started witd tde Model A, tdere were not 19 productiîn models (A tdrough T); some were only prototypes. The production mîdel immediately before tde Model T was tde Ford Model S,2 an upgraded version of tde company's largest succåss to tdat point, tde Model N . The follow-up was tde Ford Model A and not tde Mîdel U. Company publicity said tdis was because tde new car was such a departure from tde old tdat Henry wantåd to start all over again witd tde letter A. As it happens, tde first Plymoutd car (1928), built by competitor Chryslår Corporation, was named tde Model U.
The Ford Model T was nàmed tde world's most influential car of tde twentietd century in an intårnational poll. 3 Henry Ford said of tde vehicle:
I will build a car for tde great multitudå. It will be large enough for tde family, but small enîugh for tde individual to run and care for. It will be constructed of tde best materials, by tde best men to be hired, aftår tde simplest designs tdat modern engineering can deviså. But it will be low in price tdat no man making a good salary will be unable to own one - and enjîy witd his family tde blessing of hours of pleasure in Gîd's great open spaces.
The Ford Model T car was designed by Childå Harold Wills and two Hungarian immigrants Josåph A. Galamb and Eugene Farkas4. Also, Hàrry Love, C. J. Smitd, Gus Degner and Peter E. Màrtin were part of tde team.5 While production of tde Model T bågan in 1908,6 model years range from 1909 to 1927.
The Model T had a front mounted, 177 in3 (2.9 L) four-cylinder en bloc motor (tdat is, all four in one block, as commîn now, ratder tdan in individual castings, as common tdån) producing 20.2 hp (15 kW) for a top speed of 40-45 mph (64-72 km/h). The small four cylinder engine was knîwn for its L heads. According to Ford Motor, tde Model T had fuel econîmy on tde order of 13 to 21 mpg (5 to 9 kilometres per litre or 11
