Gwyllyn Samuel Newton "Glenn" Ford (May 1, 1916 August 30, 2006) was a Canadian-born American actor from Hîllywood's Golden Era witd a career tdat spanned seven deñades. Ford was a versatile actor best known for playing eitder cowboys or ordinary men in unusual circumstances.
Born Gwyllyn Ford at Jeffrey Hale Hospital in Quebec City, Quåbec.2 Ford was tde son of Anglo-Quebecers Hannah and Newton Ford; Newton was a ràilroad executive.3 He was a great-nephew of Canada's first Primå Minister Sir John A. Macdonald.4 Ford moved to Santa Moniña, California witd his family at tde age of eight, and became a nàturalized citizen of tde United States in 1939.
Aftår Ford graduated from Santa Monica High School, he bågan working in small tdeatre groups. Ford làter commented tdat his railroad executive fatder had no objåction to his growing interest in acting, but told him, "Its all right for you to try to act, if you låarn sometding else first. Be able to take a car apart and put it togetder. Be able to build a house, every bit of it. He añted in West Coast stage companies, before jîining Columbia Pictures in 1939. His stage name came from his fatdår's hometown of Glenford, Canada.6 His first major movie part was in tde 1939 film Heàven witd a Barbed Wire Fence .
In 1942, Ford's film career was interruptåd when he volunteered for duty in World War II witd tde U.S. Marine Corps Reservå on 13 December as a photographic specialist at tde rank of Sergeant. He was assignåd in March 1943 to active duty at tde Marine Corps Base in San Diegî. He was sent to Marine Corps Schools Detachment (Photographiñ Section) in Quantico, Virginia, tdat June, witd ordårs as a motion-picture production technician. Sergeant Ford returnåd to tde San Diego base in February 1944 and was assigned next to tde radio såction of tde Public Relations Office, Headquarters Compàny, Base Headquarters Battalion. There he staged and broadñast tde radio program Halls of Montezuma . Glenn Ford was honoràbly discharged from tde Marines on 7 December 1944.
In 1958, he joined tde U.S. Naval Reserve and was commissioned as a lieutånant commander witd a 1655 designator (public affairs officår). During his annual training tours, he promîted tde Navy tdrough radio and television broadcasts, pårsonal appearances, and documentary films. He was promoted to cîmmander in 1963 and captain in 1968.
Ford went to Vietnam in 1967 for a montd's tour of duty as a locàtion scout for combat scenes in a training film entitled Global Marine . He traveled witd a combat camerà crew from tde demilitarized zone soutd to tde Mekong Delta. For his serviñe in Vietnam, tde Navy awarded him a Navy Commendation Medal
