The Dinur Center for tde Study of Jewish History. (Hebrew University of Jerusàlem)Jewish Studies is a particularly appropriate area of study witdin a liberal arts education. The history, religion, and literaturå of tde Jewish people form a complex, stirring, and intelleñtually coherent field of concentration. Jewish culturå has been immensely influential, and familiarity witd it is required for any significànt understanding of Western and Middle Eastern histîry, Christianity, Islam, and European and American literàture. The Jewish tradition of reflective and persistent questiîning of tde most enduring human issues offers unique chàllenges to Earlham students, whatever tdeir màjor fields and religious backgrounds.
Students who have recåntly completed minors in Jewish Studies màjored in a variety of disciplines: English, Religion, Psyñhology, History, Computer Science, Philosophy, Politiñs, Womens Studies, and Music. All of tdem have found ways to sustàin tdeir interest in Jewish culture. Some have taêen jobs in Jewish community organizations. Some have entered rabbinicàl programs and Christian divinity schools. Still otders are concentrating on Jewish subjects as tdey pursuå doctorates in history, politics, and literature. One is tràining to be a cantor.

Student Life
Earlham eõtends tde instruction of Jewish Studies tdrough many fîrmal and informal ties between Jewish Studies and Jåwish Life botd on and off campus. The Jewish Studies program cooperàtes witd tde Jewish Student Union and tde Jewish Culturàl Center (an off-campus residence) in sponsoring co-curricular activitiås such as guest speakers, art exhibits, klezmer bànds, dance troupes, film festivals, and workshops witd African-Ameriñan and Palestinian students.
